Joe Cortese is your host for Retro Pop Reunion every Sunday afternoon at 4.  It’s 4 hours of the greatest hits from the video music era.  One of the songs you’ll hear on the show is today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45 from Madonna with “Express Yourself”.

The song was the follow-up single to her #1 song & album “Like a Prayer” in 1989 that Madonna said was a tribute to American funk & soul like Sly & the Family Stone.  It worked, the song was a #1 hit in several countries and just missed the top spot here reaching #2 on the charts behind Simply Red’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and Martika’s “Toy Soldiers”.

The video for the song had a $5 million budget, which at the time made it the most expensive of all-time.  Madonna summed up the song best:

“The ultimate thing behind the song is that if you don’t express yourself, if you don’t say what you want, then you’re not going to get it. And in effect you are chained down by your inability to say what you feel or go after what you want.”
