Today we celebrate the 64th birthday of an American original, Weird Al Yankovic! For today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, it’s his biggest hit, “Eat It”!
Since having a comedy song appear on the Dr. Demento Show in 1976 when he was just a teenager, Weird Al has been entertaining us with over 150 parody songs and 6 platinum albums. Of course Al took advantage of the MTV era by not only making fun of the song with different lyrics, but putting his humorous spin on the videos as well.
“Eat It” was his first top 40 hit, reaching #12 on the charts in 1984, of course making fun of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. According to Weird Al, he wasn’t sure how Michael would react to his lyrics, but he thought it was funny and allowed him to record it.
The rest is music history! Happy Birthday Al and check out the classic video of “Eat It” today’s Forgotten 45.
