Today we celebrate the birthday of an American treasure and icon, Dolly Parton who turns 77 years old today! In celebration, I’ve chosen her first top 40 crossover hit as today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, “Here You Come Again”.
Dolly is a country music icon and one of the best selling female artists of all-time with sales of over 100 million records. A prolific songwriter, entrepreneur, and now philanthropist, Dolly has been in the public eye for well over 50 years.
“Here You Come Again” was a rare Dolly hit because she did not write the song, it was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Well and originally meant for a Brenda Lee comeback song. When she passed, it found it’s way to Dolly who was looking to broaden her appeal beyond country music.
To say it worked is an understatement, the song was a 5 week #1 on country radio and became her first pop-crossover hit reaching #3 on the charts in early 1978.
