This Saturday morning from 8 to noon, 105.7 KOKZ brings you part 2 of the Top 100 Songs of 1977 countdown on American Top 40. It’s where I found today’s pick for the Forgotten 45 at 3:45, from Marvin Gaye “Got To Give It Up”.
The song topped three different Billboard charts in ’77 and was written as a request from Gaye’s album to release a disco song. Marvin wasn’t a fan of the genre, claiming it lacked substance. When he finally did get into the studio to record, he was set on writing a song parodying a disco setting.
It spent a week at #1 on the pop charts, sandwiched between “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, and the Rocky theme “Gonna Fly Now” and the song inspired a young Michael Jackson who then wrote and recorded “Shake Your Body” and “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” which borrowed some of the same signature sounds.
