Eddie Cochran – Twenty Flight Rock

From 1957, the song Paul McCartney impressed John Lennon with at their first meeting, after a church fete (fair). John’s skiffle group, The Quarrymen, had just performed and Paul, barely 15 years old, was there to see them.

Paul introduced himself to John, saying that he plays guitar too. John have him his guitar and told him to show him something… Paul immediately went right into Eddie Cochran’s Twenty Flight Rock, which was featured in the 1956 conedy, The Girl Can’t Help It. featuring  Jayne Mansfield. John was very impressed. Not just in how well Paul played it, but that he knew all the words! John was never good at that and had often made up words on the spot of a popular song the band performed.

John asked Paul if he knew how to tune a guitar. He did and then tuned his and another’s guitar on the spot. Paul then taught them how to do it, as John had been paying someone to tune his guitar for him.

That day, John Lennon asked PaulMcCartney to join The Quarrymen. Paul accepted the invite and the “big bang” of what became The Beatles and the future of pop music, ensued.
