The song was co-written by Carole King and was first a hit for The Drifters in 1962, their version of the song went to #5 and is included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. James Taylor, who played guitar for Carole King in 1971 on her live version of the song released his version in ’79 as the first single from his album “Flag”, the song went to #28 on the charts.
James would hit the top 40 one more time in 1981 with “Her Town Too” a duet with J.D. Souther. A cool summer tune from James Taylor with “Up On The Roof”. I found a video of his performing the song live in 1999, it’s today’s Forgotten 45.
