The musical movie “Grease” debuted in theaters on this day in 1978! In celebration of the 48th Anniversary, today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45 is one of the many hits from the film, it’s John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John with “Summer Nights”.
Grease was the word in the Summer of ’78 as America watched Danny Zuko chased after Sandy Olsson the Aussie exchange student. The movie was the #1 movie of the year and made over $341 million dollars at the box office, even surpassing “The Sound of Music” to become the biggest musical of all-time at the time.
Of course the movie soundtrack was huge as well selling over 30 million copies and featuring hits like “You’re The One That I Want”, “Grease”, and the award winning “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. “Summer Nights” was the 4th single from the album released in August of ’78, the song went to #5 on the charts and is still considered one of the great summer songs of all-time.
