Last night I was looking for something to watch on TV when I saw there was an Eddie Murphy documentary on Netflix called “Being Eddie”. Any story of Eddie’s meteoric rise in fame wouldn’t be complete without his hit song “Party All the Time”, it’s today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45.
The documentary follows Murphy’s life from childhood, to being an instant star on Saturday Night Live as a teenager, his stand-up specials like “Delirious” and “Raw” and of course his movie star fame starting with films like “48 Hours” and the “Beverly Hills Cop” series.
One of his idols Richard Pryor bet Eddie $100,000 he wouldn’t be able to record a musical album with no jokes. So in 1985 stranded in Buffalo, NY during a blizzard, Eddie Murphy teamed up with Rick James for “Party All the Time” a song that went all the way to #2 on the charts, blocked from #1 by Lionel Richie’s “Say You Say Me”.
Critics called it “Gumby does disco”, but Eddie’s star power made it happen, and he never got paid by Richard Pryor!
