For the first time since 1994, the Cedar Rapids Kernels are Midwest League Champions, defeating the Great Lake Loons 7-6 in Game 3 last night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The title breaks a 29-year championship drought and is the first for the Kernels as a Twins affiliate. Cedar Rapids finishes the year with a total record of 86-52 and with division titles in both halves of the regular season, the West Division postseason championship and the league championship.
Cedar Rapids has had a baseball team since 1890 with names like the Cedar Rapids Bunnies from 1904-1932, and have been affiliated with the Cardinals, Giants, Astros, and Reds, before becoming the Kernels in the 1993 season with the Angels organization. In 2013, the Kernels became an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
Congratulations!
