For the Monday Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we pay tribute to a superstar collaboration between Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder with “Ebony & Ivory”.
On this date in 1982, the song reached #1 on the charts and then stayed there for 7 straight weeks. The song appears on Paul’s “Tug of War” album and uses the black & white keys of a piano with the theme of racial harmony.
The song was recorded in 1981 and was the first time that McCartney had released a duet with another major artist, of course he then went on to record with Michael Jackson. The critics viewed the song as “overly simplistic and sentimental” but there’s no disputing the popularity of the song.
