To kick off another week of Forgotten 45’s at 3:45, we go back to this week in 1975 for Ozark Mountain Daredevils with “Jackie Blue”.
The band was formed in 1972 in Springfield, Missouri and hit the charts first in ’74 with “If You Wanna Get to Heaven”. “Jackie Blue” was their biggest hit reaching #3 on the charts. The song was written by their drummer Larry Lee and it was inspired by a drug dealer and bartender he’d once known. As they prepared the songs for their album It’ll Shine When It Shines in the final months of 1973, the band recalls Lee previewing the song for the band as “Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Jackie Blue/ He was dada, and dada doo/ He did this, he did that/ He went here, he went there/ Blah, blab, blab Ooh ooh Jackie”.
Obviously they filled in the blanks and the song went on to be a 70’s classic. Check out a live performance of Ozark Mountain Daredevils with “Jackie Blue”, today’s Forgotten 45.
