Bette Midler landed the leading role in a movie loosley based on Janis Joplin’s lige and story. A work of fiction with some very real details written in to mirror Janis’ experiences.
Bette’s first film shows her a woman of many talents and she becomes more than just a bawdy lounge singer. She is launched to super-star status.
Part of the reason for that is that she has a Top 5 hit that stays on the charts for a long time, the title track to the movie – “The Rose”.
It peaks at #3 on the Hot 100 but tops the Canada RPM Adult Contemporary and US Billboard Adult Contemporary as well as US Cash Box Top 100! Bette also wins a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, beating out Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer!
