Steve Martin and the Toot Uncommons – King Tut

Between 1976 -1979 Treasures of Tutankhamun had been a travelling exhibit across the country and getting millions of visitors. Since King Tut, as so many called him, was so popular, Steve Martin thought he could characature this and pay tribute in weird way – through song!

He gathered many members of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (called them the Toot Uncommons – a play on the name Tutankhamun) and recorded a song he wrote about King Tut. “Buried with a donkey/He’s my favorite honkey” are just a couple of hilarious lyrics.

The song was performed on SNL in 1978 to funny reviews and climbed the Hot 100 to peak at #17!

Hear it again this Saturday morning on AT40 – The 70s!
