The NMFH stands for the National Museum of Funeral History. The place is HUGE and located in Houston. It’s a non-profit so most of the things you can see here have been donated or found by curators (probably not found six feet under ground, but maybe found in an old building or barn where it was stored for someone else…).

The place even has a fine way of raising money for the museum – Golf Tourneys! The money raised comes from buy-ins that will offer a cash prize and then all leftover funds go into the upkeep and continuous building and adding to the museum.

Is this morose? Morbid? No more than going to funerals and wakes where we say goodbye the last time to a body on display. It what we do to cope with the terrible loss. But a museum created to educate and testify to the many ways people will say goodbye, or the  cultures that deal with death differently and their practices, or the many ways one can inter the lost loved one, like basic wooden casket or more opulently, with encrusted diamonds, or even coffins shaped like fish, or airplanes…. It ALL there on display.

If you have a living will or are thinking about getting one, maybe look into this museum for inspiration and direction for those who will be there to grant your final wishes. It could be a solemn and dignified event, or a way-out funky party! Whatever you want! It’s YOUR funeral!
