The legendary Tom Petty was born on this date in 1950 so for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we go back to his 2nd ever Hot 100 chart hit from 1978 it’s “I Need to Know”.
Thomas Earl Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida on Oct 20th, 1950 and went on to become a rock and roll legend with his band the Heartbreakers. They sold over 80 million albums and hit the top 40 15 different times including with the top ten songs “Don’t Do Me Like That” and his solo hit “Free Fallin”. “I Need to Know” was the second ever chart hit for the group just missing the top 40 at #41 back in ’78.
I remember seeing Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in concert at Carver-Hawkeye Arena back in February of 1990 with opening act Lenny Kravitz! On what would’ve been his 76th birthday, it’s Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers with “I Need to Know” it’s today’s Forgotten 45.
