Today is Bob Geldof’s 75th birthday AND it’s a Monday, so today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45 was an obvious choice. From his band The Boomtown Rats it’s “I Don’t Like Mondays”.
Formed in Ireland in 1975, the band had 11 top 40 hits in the UK and in their home country, the biggest was their song “I Don’t Like Mondays”, written after a school shooting in San Diego in 1979 that killed 8 people. The shooter when asked for an explanation for her terrible acts was quoted as saying “I Don’t Like Mondays”. The song was a multi-week #1 in England in the Summer of ’79 and became the only Boomtown Rats song to hit the Hot 100 in the states.
Geldof is best known for his charity work with Band Aid and Live Aid which raised hundreds of millions of dollars. He received many awards for his work including being named an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire in 1986.
