The very first MTV Video Music Award show aired on September 14th, 1984!  So for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45 it’s the most awarded video from the show, Herbie Hancock with “Rockit”.

Radio Music City Hall in New York City was the site for the first ever MTV Awards, hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd with performances by Rod Stewart, David Bowie, ZZ Top, and Madonna showing her underwear while performing “Like a Virgin”!  But it was Herbie Hancock who was the night’s biggest winner, taking home 5 trophies for the video for “Rockit”.  The song won more awards than Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

The song wasn’t even a Top 40 hit, but it was a #1 Dance hit and showed the power of MTV.   Released in the Summer of ’83 it’s Herbie Hancock with “Rockit” it’s today’s Forgotten 45.
