Friday’s Forgotten 45: Genesis

By Jeff Winfield Feb 28, 2025 | 3:43 PM

On this February 28th I was wondering if there had ever been an American Top 40 show on a Leap Day.  It turns out there was, on February 29th, 1992 and from that chart I found today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45 from Genesis with “I Can’t Dance”.

The song appears on their 14th album “We Can’t Dance” released in November of 1991.  It was the final album with Phil Collins before he departed later that decade.  The album sold over 4 million copies and featured hits like “No Son of Mine” and “Hold on My Heart”.

The guitar riff for “I Can’t Dance” was done by Mike Rutherford as kind of a joke and the group didn’t think it would go anywhere.  But after Tony Banks added keyboards and Phil came up with some lyrics, they decided they might just have something.  They did, their 16th top 40 hit as “I Can’t Dance” went to #7 in 1992.

From Leap Day 33 years ago, enjoy Genesis with “I Can’t Dance” today’s Forgotten 45.
