Wednesday’s Forgotten 45: Bobby Brown

By Jeff Winfield Feb 5, 2025 | 3:43 PM

It’s another birthday edition of the Forgotten 45 at 3:45 as Bobby Brown celebrates his 56th today.  We go back to the Summer of 1988 for his first solo hit “Don’t Be Cruel”.

One of the pioneers of “New Jack Swing” Bobby Brown started his career as one of the founding members of New Edition from 1978 to 1985.  He went solo and struck it big with his second album “Don’t Be Cruel” which sold over 12 million copies and delivered five top 10 hits including the #1 song “My Prerogative”.  The title track was his first hit single reaching #8.

In 1989 he met Whitney Houston at the Soul Train Music Awards and they later wed in 1992.  The divorced in 2007 and of course the rest of the story had a tragic ending with the deaths of Whitney and their daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Today though we remember happier times and music with Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel” today’s Forgotten 45.
