The legendary Tina Turner was born on this date in 1939, so for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we go back to 1989 for her song “The Best”.
Born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26th, 1939 in Tennessee, like so many singers, she got her start singing in church choir. After moving to St. Louis, Tina and her sisters began singing in nightclubs where she met Ike Turner which was a successful, yet turbulent run through the 60’s and 70’s.
By the early 80’s, Tina Turner was mostly a nostalgia act until the 1984 release of “Private Dancer” which led to her only #1 song “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, multiple Grammy awards, and renewed fame.
In 1989 she released her “Foreign Affair” album which features “The Best” which was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler and offered first to Paul Young. Tina’s version went to #15 on the chart. Of course Tina Turner passed away last May at the age of 83.
