I’m back in the saddle with another Forgotten 45 at 3:45! Today we remember the late, great Alex Trebek who was born on this date in 1940 with Weird Al’s “I Lost on Jeopardy”.
Born on July 22nd, 1940, Alex Trebek is best known for hosting Jeopardy for 37 years from 1984 until 2020. Born in Ontario, Canada, he worked for the Canadian Broadcast Company out of college, doing news casts and events like horse racing and curling. He moved to the U.S. in 1973 and hosted several game shows like The Wizard of Odds and High Rollers. In 1984 Merv Griffin decided to reboot Jeopardy, long-time host Art Fleming passed on the show, so enter Alex Trebek and the rest is television history.
Also in 1984, Weird Al Yankovic did his parody of the Greg Kihn Band’s song “Jeopardy” and contrary to pop culture, had nothing to do with the return of the game show! It is however a fitting tribute to the show and it’s host.
