Born in Burbank, California, Jay started classical piano lessons at age 12, switched to the banjo at 16 and along with his brother Tom, a fiddler, started a bluegrass band called the Oat Hill Stump Straddlers! He was then part of the group Spirit in the 60’s and Jo Jo Gunne before taking a year and half off from music.
He worked on some music with Joe Walsh and recorded his album “Thunder Island” in 1978 and the title track became his first and only top ten hit.
