Asia – Only Time Will tell
Super-group, Asia, released their debut on this day, 39 years ago, today! It was 1981 when John Wetton of King Crimson and UK, Carl Palmer from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Geoff Downes of Yes and The Buggles, and Steve Howe of Yes formed the group in London. Each musician in the top ranks of their perspective field, they all knew that when the media heard about them joining together, it would be big music news.
Their eponymous debut was recorded in 1982 (hence the lyrics in “Heat Of The Moment” – “Now you find yourself in ’82…”) and then released in 1983. The aforementioned song was huge and climbed up the Top 40 to peak in the Top 10! The second single, “Only Time Will Tell” also did well on the Hot 100, stalling at #17 in the U.S.
You could say these pioneers of prog rock, created a new genre, Pop Progressive Rock!
