Disney + is streaming the original The Muppet Show episodes and it’s glorious! I loved watching the show as a kid, but they were just puppets doing crazy things and looking funny. Much like my favorite cartoon series, Looney Tunes, the jokes go further when watching as an adult. I spent most of the weekend watching The Muppet Show from the first episode with guest star, Rita Moreno (though I think Joel Grey was the first guest, based on airdate), who was an amazing dancer! I knew she was known as a Broadway star, but I never realizes how good of a dancer she was! I mainly remember her from Electric Company on PBS.
But the jokes… When you’re old enough to understand the humor, the show is so much more fun! And, you REALLY get to appreciate the effort and expertise of the “muppeteers” and their craft. It’s an artform to bring inanimate pieces of fabric to life, and so well, you believe that they are really alive. Each Muppet has it’s only personality and mannerisms as anyone else does. Specific movements or ticks that set one a part from another and bring that character to life.
I started watching sometime Saturday afternoon….. Stopped when I went to bed about 9p…. Started watching again Sunday morning before my show, then again after! It’s so much fun and funny, that watching it as an adult with kid eyes can make any day brighter.
