As a big basketball fan, this is the best time of the year!  The conference tourneys start soon followed by the NCAA Tournament.  And of course the state tourneys in Des Moines as well.  Well this past weekend was something else.

On Saturday, the UNI Panthers won the Missouri Valley regular season title with an exciting overtime win over Loyola 102-96 at the McLeod Center.  They will be the 1 seed in Arch Madness in St. Louis and will play this Friday at noon, you can follow the Panthers on our sister station News Talk 1540 KXEL.

Yesterday I was in attendance for the first sold out women’s game at Carver since 1988 and the Hawks didn’t disappoint!  Iowa hit an incredible 16 of 29 from three point range including 8 of 11 by superstar Caitlin Clark and destroyed #6 Michigan 104-80 in front of a terrific crowd in Iowa City.  Iowa claimed a share of the B1G title and will be the 2 seed in the conference tourney, their first game will be Friday at 5:30.

The Iowa State women are #9 in the nation and will play #5 Baylor tonight for the Big 12 title.  The Cyclones are 24-4 and are led by Iowa City native Ashley Joens.

The Iowa and Iowa State men both have 20 win seasons and are looking like tourney teams.  The Hawks wrap up with games vs Northwestern, Michigan, and Illinois, while the Cyclones finish with Oklahoma State and Baylor.

It’s going to be a fun March in Iowa!
