John Sebastian – Welcome Back
Former Lovin’ Spoonful founding member, John Sebastian had a very good solo career with some great albums. However, it was one song that became a cutural icon in it’s own right.
TV producer, Alan Sachs wanted a theme song that sounded like the Lovin’ Spoonful so he asked John Sebastian to write it. John couldn’t work out a rhyme with the TV show’s title, (originally just called Kotter) so he just omitted it all together. Sachs liked the song so well, he changed the name of the show!
“Welcome Back” went to #1 in 1976, partly due to the popularity of the show, but mostly, because it was a great song!
