Billy Joel – Sometimes A Fantasy

Not one of Billy Joel’s biggest or most rememebered hit, but hit the Top 40 in 1980… barely.
‘Glass Houses’ ended up being a big seller and very popular album. Not to the extent of 1977’s ‘The Stranger’ which garnered him a Grammy and is his masterpiece, in my opinion.
The last single, “Sometimes A Fantasy” was a faced paced rocker that dealt with a lonely guy trying to convince is lover to have phone sex since they were so far apart. However, at the end of the call, he realizes that the conversation only happened in his head as the other party never answered his call. VERY risque’ for the time, ESPECIALLY for radio! The fact that it got to #36 says a lot about Billy Joel’s continued popularity and power in music.
Check the video below. It’s pretty humorous as Billy is no stranger (see what I did there?) to acting and plays two parts – The lonely man and his tough, leather-clad alter ego, convincing him to make the lewd call in the first place.
