Celebrating Bob Dylan’s 80th birthday!

Bob Dylan – Gotta Serve Somebody

In the late 70s, Bob Dylan converted to Evangelical Christianity. Born Jewish, he was never very secular or very religious, but when he converted, he had a string of albums that reflected his newly accepted spirituality.

‘Slow Train Coming’ was the first album to have a more Christian narrative. The song, “Gotta Serve Somebody” have the lyrics:

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Many fans didn’t like this new direction and didn’t appreciate being preached to through his music. he may have lost some listeners, but he win a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Male in 1980, with this song.
The song is Dylan’s last Top 40 entry. It peaked at #24 on the Hot 100!
