The song was the first single from his “Sign of the Times” double album, even though it wasn’t as commercially successful as “Purple Rain”, many critics consider this his best album. In fact it was nominated for Album of the Year at the 30th Grammy Awards.
The project delivered three top 10 hits, “You Got the Look” with Sheena Easton, “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man”, and “Sign of the Times” went to #3 in 1987. And the song is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll.
