Today is the 46th anniversary of the NCAA championship game between Larry Bird and Indiana State vs. Magic Johnson and Michigan State back in 1979, so for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we go back to this week in ’79 for Donna Summer and “Heaven Knows”.
March 26th, 1979 in Salt Lake City the undefeated Sycamores from Indiana State led by the “Hick From French Lick” Larry Bird took on the Spartans led by Earvin “Magic” Johnson. The game was the most watched college basketball in history with an estimated 40 million viewers. Of course Bird and Magic would continue their rivalry into the NBA raising the fortunes of the league.
1979 was a huge year for Donna Summer with back to back #1 songs “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls”. “Heaven Knows” was a #4 song for three weeks, peaking in March of 1979 with backing vocals from Brooklyn Dreams.
In case you’ve forgotten, Michigan State handed Indiana State their only loss in the title game winning 75-64 giving the Spartans their first National Championship. Check out the late, great Donna Summer with “Heaven Knows” it’s today’s Forgotten 45.
