Monday’s Forgotten 45: Gilbert O’Sullivan

By Jeff Winfield Mar 17, 2025 | 3:43 PM

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Waters played a bunch of songs this morning on the Waters Wake-Up Call, but I did find a Forgotten 45 at 3:45 he missed this morning.  From Gilbert O’ Sullivan it’s “Alone Again (Naturally)”.

Born in Waterford, Ireland, Gilbert O’Sullivan and his family moved to England when he was 7 years old, and when he was 21 he moved to London.  Determined to get a record deal, he created an image to garner attention featuring his cloth cap and short trousers.  It worked!  While his first couple of singles didn’t get much airplay, but he had his first UK hit in 1970.

In 1972 he became internationally known with the #1 hit “Alone Again (Naturally)”.  It spent 6 weeks at the top of the chart and was the 2nd most popular song of the year behind only Roberta Flack’s classic “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”.

An Irish tune for today’s Forgotten 45, it’s Gilbert O’Sullivan “Alone Again (Naturally)”!
