For today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we celebrate the 44th anniversary of Dolly Parton’s #1 hit “9 To 5”! A true American success story Miss Dolly recorded 26 #1 country hits and has been a part of over 240 single releases in her legendary career.
In 1977 she started a run of pop chart hits starting with her #3 hit “Here You Come Again”, but it was “9 to 5” that went all the way to #1 in 1981 on both the pop and country charts becoming only the second female singer to accomplish that feat. The first being Jeannie C. Riley with “Harper Valley PTA”.
“9 to 5” was written the movie of the same name starring Dolly along with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The movie made over $100 million dollars and spawned a tv sitcom and eventually ended up on Broadway.
