I spent a large part of the weekend enjoying the 50th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live. From the concerts, to the musical highlights, to last night’s special, there’s no disputing SNL’s place in television history. So for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, how about the Blues Brothers with “Soul Man”.
John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd first performed the song as a cold open to a November 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live. The song went on to be a chart hit in Canada and “Soul Man” reached #14 on the U.S. charts in 1979.
Of course Jake and Elwood Blues would continue to perform live and in their classic 1980 movie The Blues Brothers which featured musical legends like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway and more. The film make over 100 million dollars at the box office and remains a mainstay on cable to this day.
Remembering SNL today with the Blues Brothers and “Soul Man” today’s Forgotten 45.
