Monday’s Forgotten 45: Bruce Springsteen

By Jeff Winfield Nov 25, 2024 | 3:43 PM

On this date in 1987 the holiday classic “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” starring Steve Martin & John Candy was released (Those aren’t pillows!).  So for today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we go back to the charts 37 years ago for the Boss with “Brilliant Disguise”.

The song appears on Bruce’s 1987 album “Tunnel of Love” and while members of the E-Street Band did perform on the project, Springsteen did most of the album himself.  The tone of the album was influenced by his personal life.  At the time his marriage to actress Julianne Phillips was failing, they divorced in 1988.

“Brilliant Disguise” was the first single from the project and the song went on to become his 10th Top 40 hit reaching #5 on the charts.   And the album went to #1 selling over 3 million copies.

If you’re a Springsteen fan, I highly recommend “Road Diary” a documentary that follows Bruce and the E-Street Band on tour.  The show is streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus.  And as for “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”, the John Hughes movie went on to make nearly 50 million dollars and it has become a Thanksgiving movie tradition over the years.

The video for “Brilliant Disguise” is in black and white and it’s today’s Forgotten 45.
