The British singer released the song as the first single from his debut album “Look Sharp” in Fall of 1978. The first time they released the song, it failed. They tried two different songs from the album, they also failed. But in 1979 with the popularity of New Wave on the rise, they tried again, and this time the song became a hit.
Joe said that many people interpreted the song as “angry”, but he thought it was a more humorous look at “gorgeous girls going out with monsters.” With a catchy bass line and a terrific hook, the song went to #21 on the charts to become his first hit.
