Welcome to a “fine” Spring day in Eastern Iowa! It’s time for the Friday Forgotten 45 at 3:45 and it was on this date in 1985 that Wendy’s fired Clara, the “Where’s The Beef” lady! So that takes to this week on the charts in ’85 for a tune from Foreigner with “That Was Yesterday”.
Before we get to Foreigner, remember Clara? She was the star of Wendy’s very popular “Where’s the Beef” commercials in the 80’s. Her first commercial debuted in January of 1984 and was so memorable, Wendy’s sales were up 31% in 1985. Because of her newfound popularity, she was able to endorse other products, as long as they didn’t conflict with Wendy’s. So she appeared in a spot for Prego sauce and “found the beef”. Wendy’s didn’t like and fired her from the campaign which sent Wendy’s into a two year sales slump!
As for Foreigner “That Was Yesterday” appears on their Agent Provocateur album and was a #12 hit for the band. Mick Jones recently announced he’s dealing with Parkinson’s and singer Lou Gramm said that his performances this year will be his last, and he’ll no longer tour as a solo act.
WHERE’S THE BEEF?! Take a trip back to 1985 with Clara and Foreigner with today’s Forgotten 45!
