For today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we go back to this week in 1987 for the superstar pairing of Aretha Franklin & George Michael with “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me”.
In 1984 George was approached to write and produce a song for Aretha for an undisclosed future soundtrack project. According to George, this was a nerve racking experience! He thought he wasn’t worthy and thought the idea of the great Aretha Franklin singing was of his songs was “ridiculous”.
Well “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me” was a one-off project that made George Michael’s dream come true and it was a monster hit, reaching #1 on charts in the United States and in England. The song also won a Grammy Award as well.
