For today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45, we check the charts on this date 35 years ago, February 13th, 1988, it’s where I found today’s tune, from the Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield “What Have I Done to Deserve This?”.
The song became the duo’s 4th top 10 hit, reaching #2 on the charts in both the U.S. and in Britain. The song became the first one where the Pet Shop Boys collaborated with another artist. The song was originally written around Christmas of 1984, but there was some disagreement on who should sing with them.
Their record label suggested Tina Turner or Barbra Streisand, but their manager suggested Dusty Springfield. Unfortunately at the time, she was unfamiliar with their music, so she passed. It was only when “West End Girls” became a hit that she changed her mind.
The song gave her music a resurgence in 1988 and the song was the biggest hit she was a part of. Enjoy a live performance of “What Have I Done to Deserve This” by the Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield, today’s Forgotten 45!
