Wednesday’s Forgotten 45: From 1973

By Jeff Winfield Sep 28, 2022 | 3:43 PM

Every Saturday morning from 9 to Noon, 105.7 KOKZ brings you American Top 40 The 70’s.  This weekend Casey features the top songs from September 29th, 1973, it’s where I found this 70’s gem from B.W. Stevenson “My Maria”.

Louis Charles Stevenson (the BW stands for Buckwheat) was born and raised in Dallas, Texas.  He co-wrote “My Maria” with Daniel Moore and the song became a #9 hit on the pop charts in the Fall of 73 and was a #1 Adult Contemporary hit.

Originally BW Stevenson shot the pilot episode of Austin City Limits, but the sound quality was poor so Willie Nelson performed the next day and they used his for the show instead.

“My Maria” was given new life in 1996 as a #1 Country hit for Brooks & Dunn.  Sadly BW Stevenson passed away after heart valve surgery at the age of 38.

Take a trip back to 73 with “My Maria” today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45!
