One of my favorite shows growing up in the 70’s was The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack. The show began it’s regular run in February of 1973 and ended on May 1st, 1981.
It was one of the few tv shows that featured live performances versus lip-syncing. When I was checking out today’s music news, I noticed that the Hues Corporation performed “Rock the Boat” on the Midnight Special this date in 1974, so they are today’s Forgotten 45 at 3:45.
The song was released in early ’74 to very little fanfare, it was only after the New York City disco scene picked up the song that it crossed over to Top 40 and became a #1 hit in July of ’74. Some say it was the first disco song to hit #1.
I couldn’t find the Midnight Special performance but you can re-live the glorious 70’s vibe of “Rock the Boat” today’s Forgotten 45.
