As we roll into the weekend, remember 105.7 KOKZ brings you Absolutely 80’s every Saturday night from 9 to midnight with MTV’s Nina Blackwood. This weekend her Total Recall Top 5 is from this week in 1983, it’s where I found today’s Forgotten 45, by Taco “Puttin’ on the Ritz”.
Taco was born in Indonesia and lived all over the world residing in the Netherlands, US, Singapore, Belgium, and Germany. While in Germany he signed his first record contract and recorded a synth-pop version of Irving Berlin’s classic, and references other classics like “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, “White Christmas”, and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”.
The single was a global smash becoming a top 5 hit in the U.S. and his only hit song here. One of the You Tube comments summed it up best:
“The rhythmic pattern of the verse of this song is one of the most bizarrely captivating vocal arrangements in music. It’s almost like it shouldn’t work or doesn’t fit but then suddenly resolves satisfyingly on the downbeat.”
An 80’s One-Hit Wonder for your Friday Forgotten from Taco!
