Back after the holiday weekend and it was on this date in 1986 that Janet Jackson’s “Control” album hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart. The project was a record breaker for Miss Jackson…if you’re Nasty. It became the first album by a female artist to feature 5 top 5 records “Nasty”, “Control”, “Let’s Wait Awhile”, and “When I Think of You” and today’s Forgotten 45, “What Have You Done For Me Lately”.
“Control” remained on the album chart for two straight years going on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide. “What Have You Done For Me Lately” was originally written for a Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis were written to reflect Janet’s feelings toward her annulment to James DeBarge. It was the first single and reached #4 on the pop charts.
