Every Saturday night from 9 to midnight, Nina Blackwood takes over 105.7 KOKZ for Absolutely 80’s, 3 hours of awesome 80’s music and stories. I found today’s Forgotten 45 on this weekend’s show from the Pet Shop Boys.
“Always On My Mind” was a ballad first recorded by Brenda Lee in 1972, but the song only reached #45 on the charts. Then Elvis recorded a version shortly after a separation from his wife Priscilla, the song reached #16 on the country charts that year.
The most well known version of the song was by Willie Nelson in 1982, his performance won 3 Grammy Awards that year, it was the #1 Country song of ’82 and the song was top 5 on the pop charts as well.
In 1987 the Pet Shop Boys performed the song on a tribute to Elvis special and it was so well received, they decided to release it as a single. It worked! It was a top 5 hit and can be heard again tomorrow night on Absolutely 80’s!
