Happy Birthday to Herbie Hancock who turns 82 today. There’s always an Iowa connection and I didn’t know that he graduated from Grinnell College with degrees in electrical engineering and music in 1960. The Chicago native started his career playing with the legendary Miles Davis who sought out Herbie as one of the most promising talents in jazz.
In fact his career reads as a virtual who’s who of music, playing with legends in nearly every kind of music. In 1983 though to the pop & MTV world with the Grammy winning hit “Rockit” the first jazz-hip hop song and the first ever mainstream hit to feature “scratching”.
And of course “Rockit” delivered a very memorable video that won 5 MTV awards and dominated airplay that year.
