Join Rock 108 with another Rock Bock stop this weekend in North Liberty! Head out to Rocky O’Brian’s to enjoy our sister stations very OWN beer! Join Russ there from 6p to 8p and grab a mug or pint or whatever vessel you drink it from!

If you like Blue Moon, you’ll enjoy this more. Like Blue Moon, Frost Proof from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa FL, is a citrusy Belgian White Ale. It pours like orange soda but the nose it orange, wheat and some coriander. Pretty consistant with a Belgian ale. I like this one over some others because the flavor profile is stronger. It has a slightly higher ABV at 6% so the taste is more flavorful than say, Blue Moon. It’s an easy drinker and when poured in a Weizen glass like this, it offers an easy way to really enjoy the nose and taste at the same time. Highly recomend for white ale lovers that like plenty of flavor that’s not too light.

I finally made it up to Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. in Decorah! What an amazing place! I was in Waukon doing some house washing so I stopped there on my way back to the Cedar Valley. I’ve had so many different beers from there, I just had to stop and see the layout. It’s huge!

I wasn’t able to sample any food as I was sweaty, wet and all around disgusting and didn’t want to offend other’s, who were there to enjoy themselves.

I did want to try a beer though as I’d been thinking about it after seeing it on their website. I ended up buying a 32oz growler of it!

Now, one of the other reasons I wanted to stop there was that they had released the Fresh Batch Series S’mores Pastry Stout. I HAD to check that one out. The can is certainly a throw-back to the 90s and you will definitely see the reference to The Prince Of Bel-Air. In fact, the tag-line says:

Stay chillin’ and relaxin’

We put no lactose in

Get it?

This is a beauty as you can see by the pic of the pour. Black dark and a wonderful, thick light brown head. It doesn’t take a genius or beer connoisseur to decipher this nose. It’s all S’MORES! Toasted marshmallow, chocolate and graham! I kid you not, the graham presents itself among the other notes!

You also get a bit of a boozy nose but that’s because this is one of, what I call, “The Big Boy Beers” at 10% ABV.

The flavor is the same dense chocolate and marshmallow with the smoke from what would be like the campfire you’re sitting by, roasting your marshmallows. I prefer mine charred so its black and ashy with a sweet, creamy middle.

If you like a VERY sweet milk stout, minus the milk, this is your beer. A thick and creamy mouthfeel and sweeter than I ever expected. I’m not a sweet beer guy, especially with a stout, but if you prefer the yin/yang of bitter and sweet, you’l probably dig this. I REALLY like the flavor and nose, but it’s way to sweet for me. I bought a four-pack so I have two left in my fridge (I gave one to Ned from Rock 108 as he is a S’mores FIEND) so I’ll be willing to share them with a friend at some point.
