Badfinger – Baby Blue

A Welsh band that started out as The Iveys in 1961 before being the first band to be signed to The Beatles own record lable, Apple. At that point, they changed their name to the working title of The Beatles’ “A Little Help From My Friends”, Badfinger.
These guys were good! A very talented and tight band by the time The Beatles’ road manager, Mal Evans, saw them and brought the band in to audition for them.
Paul McCartney was especially impressed, as were the others, and signed them to Apple almost immediately. Paul had written and recorded a demo of a song that the rest of The Beatles weren’t really into at that time. He offered it up to Badfinger to record and it became their first international hit, getting to the Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 1972, Badfinger released, ‘Straight Up’. One of their most famous and well-loved albums. two big singles did very well from it. “Day After Day” (#4 U.S.) and “Baby Blue”.
“Baby Blue” was written by Pete Ham about a woman he’d been dating while on their last tour. He invited her to join him as they toured and she had a great time, but when the band came off the road to record again, life slowed down and she realized she wasn’t interested in the recording process and touring pace the band had.
The song did well in the U.S., peaking at #14 on the Hot 100 and eventually hit #73 on 2013 after it was featured in the final episode of Breaking Bad.
