Johnny Cash – One Piece At A Time

Written by Wayne Kemp, this country novelty song crossed charts when Johnny Cash recorded it in 1976.

“One Piece At A Time” tells the story of a couple of auto workers who work on the lines that build Cadillacs in 1949, knowing they’ll never be able to afford one.

So, they devise a plan to smuggle out each part until they have everything they need to build themselves a Cadillac.

It took over 20 years to do it, but the last part, the engine, was “stolen” in 1973 and they built the car. Because cars styles, makes, shapes, parts, etc. change every year due to technology and fashion, the Cadillac is a misshapen monstrosity, but they at lease have their own Cadillac!

The song topped the Hot Country singles chart and crossed over to the Hot 100 and peaked at #29!

Hear it again this Saturday morning on AT40 – The 70s!
