Rod Stewart – The First Cut Is The Deepest

Cat Stevens wrote this back in the mid 60s, and it became a hit in the U.K. for P.P. Arnold in 1967. In the U.S., Keith Hampshire, recorded it and took it to #70 in 1973. The biggest hit, at this time, was when Rod Stewart covered it in 1976.

“The First Cut Is The Deepest”, a song about a guy explaining to a woman that he really wants to begin a relationship with her, but his first love hurt him so badly, he’s afraid to move forward with her and risk being hurt again.

Stewart’s version went Top 40, peaking at #21 in the U.S. and it topped the U.K. chart!

You may remember Sheryl Crow’s version from 2003 as it went to #14, becoming the biggest hit of all!
