Written as an exercise to see if he could write a simple song, but with thoughtful lyrics and theme, without sounding like a throw-away.
For his 1983 album, ‘Punch The Clock’, Elvis created “Everyday I Write The Book”. A song that parallel’s romance and the writing of a book. All in 10 minutes.
He had know idea it would be what it became… Because of MTV in it’s early days, videos were important, and coming from established artists like Elvis Costello. MTV rotation pushed radio to play it where it went Top 40, peaking at #36!
