RIP Charlie Daniels. It was reported he had had a stroke just before he passed.

Charlie Daniels – Still In Saigon

Written by Dan Daley, the Charlie Daniels band recorded this song during the wave attention to the Viet Nam conflict in the early 80s. This was a time that served as either a ten or fifteen year anniversary of those who served and openly talked about the issues of the U.S. being involved, the problems that have come from it and, no less, the reaction to the American soldiers coming home from the very publicly contested involvement of the U.S.

Written from the protagonist’s point of view, a decade after coming home, and the issues he suffers from because of him being over there, “Still In Saigon” represented MANY of the soldiers thoughts and feelings about what happened when they came back to the states and all of the problems that arose over time.

The song was released on the band’s 1982 album, ‘Windows”, and peaked at #22 on the Hot 100.
